I have run over 25 marathons in the last 30 years. I have never run the New York Marathon, but I have always wanted to. In 2005 and 2006 I completed an application to run New York, but I was not selected in the lottery. Last year I decided to enhance my chance of being selected, but applying to run on Team McGraw, and volunteer to raise money for the Tug McGraw Foundation. Unfortunately, I was injured, and did not run. However, I traveled to New York with my son Alex, and the two of us had a wonderful time volunteering for the Tug McGraw Foundation, and cheering the Team McGraw on.
I am honored to be running the ING New York City Marathon 2008 as a member of Team McGraw for the Tug McGraw Foundation. The Foundation seeks to raise awareness and improve the quality of life for those patients and caregivers confronted with brain tumors. As a part of Team McGraw, I am raising funds to support research in this effort.
I will also be running in memory of my mother Paula, who was diagnosed with a malignant glioma. Mom passed away last year.
The Tug McGraw Foundation was established to raise funds for pioneering brain tumor research and to increase public awareness of the disease. Over 200,000 adults and children annually receive a diagnosis of brain cancer, and the mission of the Foundation is to support research that will improve their quality of life in the physical, social, spiritual, and cognitive areas.
The Foundation develops programs and raises funds for two specific elements in this mission:
- The Tug McGraw Research Center within the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University and grants to other medical and research institutions in the United States
- Public awareness and education activities promoting knowledge and understanding of brain tumor and related issues
My profound thanks to those who supported me last year. I unabashedly request your tax-deductible support again for the Tug McGraw Foundation. It is an outstanding organization, with exceptional people who are committed to helping those inflicted by brain tumors.
On behalf of the Tug McGraw Foundation, thank you very much for your support. I appreciate your generosity.
Ya Gotta Believe!
