Last year, I ran the NYC marathon as part of Team McGraw in honor of my brother, Jeff Waters. At the time, Jeff was a 4+ year survivor of GBM. It was my first marathon and was an amazing and emotional experience, with the finale being a trip to NJ to give Jeff my finisher’s medal.
This year my oldest brother, Dave, and I will run the Chicago Marathon as a part of Team McGraw in memory of Jeff. Despite Jeff’s incredible strength and perseverance, shortly after the NYC marathon he lost his battle against brain cancer. We miss him terribly, but know that he is cruising much more peacefully on an awesome new bike path.
From an early age, Jeff was a person of few words, preferring more purposeful communication and strong action. This was especially evident after his diagnosis. He fought through all the surgeries, treatments, medications and setbacks with few complaints and an amazingly positive outlook. When feeling up to it, he devoted his time to training for and participating in cancer fundraisers. That was Jeff -- always selfless, always caring, and always believing.
As a member of Team McGraw, I pay tribute to him by continuing his efforts to say less and act more. With every step my Nike’s log for this marathon, I will be fighting this disease and supporting those that are enduring it.
I would greatly appreciate your help in making a difference for people like Jeff and the families that have to deal with this devastating disease. Thanks for your contribution!
