Riding the World for Fisher House
Mike in Shainhaiguan

I am joining this group as a newbie to GlobeRiders. I am 59 years old, married, with three college graduates and two grandchildren. I'm very proud to finally get all of mychildren through higher education: a graduate of the Air Force Academy, a son with a degree in Risk Management, and a daughter with a Doctorate in Microbiology.

My wife Lauren is very supportive of this effort, donating her time and money to support me and my chosen charity.

I am an Eagle Scout with extensive survival hiking and camping experience. I am also a serious snow skier and adventure traveler. I have been riding since my late 20’s. I have traveled extensively the North American Continent by motorcycle, hiking, truck, etc.

Logging over 100,000 miles on motorcycles of various types (from scooters, Harley’s, Honda Gold Wing’s, and KTM 400 open-class enduros), I have been on numerous tours, covering over 10,000 miles per trip. I have raced enduros, finishing 4th in the overall Southeastern Trail conference in the late 80’s . I love motorcycle touring and made a personal goal of traveling around the world for A Purpose before I fully retire. The 2008 World Tour will help me in that objective…

My second objective is to raise money for my favorite charity. To do that, H & H Insurance Services is sponsoring me in time, money and my participation to raise that money. H & H is a commercial insurance agency in Atlanta Georgia, www.h-hinsurance.com.

Fisher House supports military families, and is a wonderful group to ride for. We can make a difference to these families and soldiers. They need our help and I hope you can take the time to investigate this wonderful group. I hope you will follow my journey and then follow along with your contributions.

I will be traveling from China, to Inner Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and finally ending in Germany on the Globe Riders World Tour. Along the 17,000 km route, I will be promoting Fisher House Foundation with increased awareness and fundraising. You can follow me on my trip through my trip jounals (http://www.globeriders.com/live!journal_pages/gwt08_live!journal/gwt08_journal_bikes_bios.shtml)

Goal
A DONATION TO THE FISHER HOUSE HONORS THOSE WHO SERVE.

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. A long-term stay in a military hospital, sometimes thousands of miles from home, could mean expensive lodging and long separations from loved ones. But in recognition of the special sacrifices of severely wounded or ill service members and their families, the Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes" so that America's military families can be together during extended treatment for serious injury or lengthy physical and/or occupation therapy.

Each Fisher House creates a warm, compassionate environment where families find support and encouragement from others in similar circumstances. The houses are typically 5,000 to 16,000 square foot homes designed with eight to 21 guest suites. All are professionally decorated and beautifully furnished in the tone and style of the local region. The houses have well-stocked community kitchens, spacious dining area, and inviting living rooms complete with libraries and toys for children. Other features include in-room telephones and cable TV/VCRs, laundry facilities, housekeeping services and in-room or common-area computers with internet access. All Fisher Houses are within walking distance of the medical center, or transportation is provided. Caring staff and volunteers are available to assist guests.

Today, 38 Fisher Houses operate at 18 military bases and nine Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers throughout the nation and overseas in Germany. Since our nation has been at war, the requirements for Fisher House have changed. Many of our returning service members need intensive physical and occupationsal rehabilitation. Their Fisher House stays have become longer, and, as a result, more guest suites are needed. Also, because of the nature of their injuries, all new Fisher Houses are being designed to be completely handicapped accessible.

Fisher House Foundation programs are run by generous public support. Your donation will make a difference. For more information, call toll-free (888)294-8560 or click on the "home page" link at the top of this page.

The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organziation under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, builds new houses, assists in coordination private support, and encourages public support for the homes. Donations to the Fisher House Foundation and individual Fisher Houses are tax-deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law.

The Foundation has received the highest possible ratings from the “watch dog” organizations that evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of nonprofit organizations: For every dollar donated to Fisher House Foundation, 97.5 cents goes directly into the Fisher House program. “Overhead,” the combination of management and fundraising expenses, is only 2.5 cents.

Online donations are the most effective way of donating, but checks are accepted. Please be sure to make the payment to "Fisher House Foundation" and write the name of the person you are sponsoring in the "memo" section of the check. Checks can be mailed to:

Fisher House Foundation
Attn: Team Fisher House
PO Box 2346
Rockville, MD 20847

The person you are sponsoring will only get credit for your donation if you include his/her name on the check.
