Lauran Does 179..."so others may live"
One girl, one year, 179 miles to beat ALS..."Raising Awareness...Supporting Research...Seeking Meaningful Treatment and a Cure".
I'm a runner. There, I said it. I never thought I would be but I am and I love it. I'm not fast or even particularly coordinated but every step I take when out on a run is joyous for me. When I'm running I'm the fierce, fearless person I want to be during the other 23 hours of the day. I have my dear friend, Andrea, to thank for leading me to the sport which would successfully fill this void I felt in my life and allow me to achieve goals I never though possible. I've known Andrea for almost 16 years...since the first day of freshman year at college. I've always looked up to Andrea. She's amazing. She's smart and funny and beautiful and she's an only child like me...only much more normal! A few years ago, Andrea got into running (and eventually moved into triathlon) and I was really inspired. My friend was doing something amazing and I wanted to try it. So I did...and I thank her every time I lace up my running shoes for her inspiration. Then, something happened. My dear, lovely friend was diagnosed with ALS last year aged just 33 years - only months after she completed her first 70.3 triathlon. That's not okay. There's no cure for ALS and that needs to change...not just for Andrea, but for the thousands of other patients, caregivers, friends, and family affected by this disease. But ALS hasn't stopped this girl. She has worked regularly over the last several months to raise awareness of the disease - even completing a sprint triathlon. She fundraises for a fantastic charity called the Blazeman Foundation named after Jon 'Blazeman' Blais, a triathlete just like Andrea and ALS sufferer. This year I'm joining Andrea's gang of ALS warriors, Team Drea, and am raising money for the Blazeman Foundation to push the search for treatments and a cure forward. What's my plan? Andrea's lucky number - one that's literally been popping up in her life for decades - is 179. It is also rather magically the number Jon 'Blazeman' Blais wore on his bib when he completed his Ironman post ALS diagnosis. I've put 179 at the centre of my fundraising challenge and am running 179 competition miles over 15 races throughout 2015 to raise as much money and awareness as possible. The events comprise of: three marathons, four half marathons, two 10 milers, one 13.1km 'kilomathon,' two 10km's, and three 5km's. A full list of events and dates can be found on my new blog (details below). In exchange for all this running, I'd be eternally grateful if you would consider making a donation to this worthy and vital cause. If a financial contribution is out of the question, there are lots of other ways to get involved. You could join me and run one of these events or even cheer from the sidelines. All support is welcome and appreciated! I'll be posting occasional updates on social media and I've also started a blog in case anyone is interested in following my progress: www.laurandoes179.com Thank you so very much in advance for your support! All the best, Lauran Halpin #teamdrea
Despite 22 million(plus) people dying from ALS since 1869, there remains still no meaningful treatment or cure for this disease. Jon and ALS patients everywhere are basically offered the same treatment options as Lou Gehrig in 1939. Without raising awareness and funding, ALS will not receive the research efforts necessary to find a cure and will continue to strike down every person who is diagnosed with ALS...Join Jon, "fight the good fight"...Believe there will be a cure, and "others will live", bmom and bdad...jon's mom and dad.

"People do not follow titles, they follow courage. If you will just lead them onto the battlefield, they will follow you and so will I, unite us... unite the clans." - Braveheart

Blazeman Foundation for ALS Mission Statement:
1.) Raise awareness about ALS by leveraging the energy and compassion of the multi-sport community and
2.) Raise funds to "fund" research to find a cure for ALS. "so others may live."

"Since 1869, twenty one plus million people have suffered and then died from ALS." There have been no survivors.
"Believe...Pick a stronger word than Hope...Cure" -blazeman. We strive to hear words not yet spoken, "I AM A ALS SURVIVOR."
