| Hi everyone!
In 2009 I did my first marathon, a small one in Grand Rapids. Obviously I enjoyed it enough to sign up for Chicago! My first marathon was for me, but I told myself any other marathon I do will be for a cause.
I choose Bear Necessities for a few reasons, one because it is local to Chicago and the others are below.
This is from a friend regarding her daughter.
Atia was diagnosed with ALL leukemia on April 17, 2009. She was only 17 months old at the time.
Despite being lost in the overwhelming fear, sadness and disbelief accompanying Atia's diagnosis, Steve and I quickly realized that our normal living expenses continued to require attention and the medical bills and prescription expenses quickly began to add up. Luckily, Bear Necessities was there to help offset some of our costs. Their “small miracles” program was introduced to us and the next thing we knew, we received several monetary donations that were to be applied towards normal living expenses.
The “small miracle” program is actually two-fold. The first part is to provide financial assistance to the families (as explained above) and the second part is to provide something special for the child undergoing treatment. Bear Necessities has agreed to give Atia a brand new “big girl bed” when she’s ready. She’s really excited about the prospect.
Atia is now 2.5 years old. She’s growing and thriving, even though she’s still undergoing active chemo treatments. Her hair has begun to grow back and she’s running, jumping and laughing along with all the other children her age. She will wrap up her 2.5 year treatment plan on July 10, 2011. She’s been through so much in her short lifetime. She’s a true inspiration and hero!

Their ultimate goal is to cure cancer and put themselves out of business. Help me fund this important mission and make this run more meaningful then my last one. Thanks! |
