| A couple of summers ago, I walked to Erie Cafe with Peter and Griffin for a relaxing alfresco dinner on the Chicago River. Dinner was anything but relaxing. Griffin started tugging on his leash, moving from table to table looking for handouts. He finally found a willing participant across from us. A man eating dinner with his wife decided to offer Griffin a bite. The man's name was Greg, his wife's name was Kathleen, and we all had a good laugh watching Griffin help Greg clear his plate. We began chatting and I learned that Kathleen is the president of Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation: an organization dedicated to eliminating pediatric cancer and to providing hope and support to those who are touched by it. The Foundation was named in memory of Kathleen's eight year old son, Barrett "Bear" Krupa, who died after battling cancer for more than 5 years.
As a pediatric dentist, I've treated kids with cancer, lost kids to cancer and witnessed firsthand the everyday struggles faced by affected children and their families. The struggles are heartbreaking, and these families need your help.
Oct. 10, 2010 will be a big day for me. I'll be running in the Chicago Marathon (my first marathon!), and I'm proud to be running with Team Bear. I'm so glad Griffin introduced me to Kathleen, Greg and Bear Necessities, and I'm thrilled to lend support to this wonderful organization. Please, please be generous and help me reach my goal of $3000. Thanks, and I hope to see you at the finish line! |
