Like all children, children who have disabilities need opportunities to grow and develop to their maximum ability. To help their children grow, parents and caretakers need both knowledge and support.
Support for Families of Children with Disabilities is a parent-run, San Francisco-based non-profit organization founded in 1982. Our purpose is to ensure that families of children with any kind of disability or special health care need have the knowledge and assistance they need to make informed choices that support their child’s health, education, and development. We provide peer support to families, and information and education to families, professionals, and the community at large. Most of our staff members, volunteers, and board members are, themselves, parents of children with disabilities.
Support for Families offers a wide range of information, education, and parent-to-parent peer support services free of charge to San Francisco families. These services include a parent-to-parent phone line, drop-in family resource center, support groups, training, volunteer Parent Mentors, and resource libraries. SFCD also provides information and educational services to professionals who work with families, and actively collaborates with other organizations to work towards a more coordinated, family-friendly network of services. Last year alone, Support for Families responded to more than 10,000 requests for information, education, or support.
