About YMCA of San Francisco
In the 150 years since the first YMCA in San Francisco opened in a few small rooms above a post office in Chinatown, the organization has played a pivotal role in improving the quality of life of millions of Bay Area residents.
People often associate the YMCA with its extensive health and wellness, sports and camping programs. Yet, central as these are to the YMCA mission, they are only the most visible part of its major impact on individual lives and neighborhoods.
In fact, the YMCA of San Francisco is pivotal in addressing some of the major challenges faced by the Bay Area, including substance abuse prevention, child care, at risk youth, the isolated elderly, and new immigrants struggling for a foothold.
Through its branches and community-based programs in four Bay Area counties, the YMCA of San Francisco provides leadership in:
-Child Care
-Mentoring and individual and family counseling for at-risk youth
-Health and wellness programs for all ages
-GED, job readiness an computer training
-Substance abuse prevention
-Social and recreational programs for older adults
-After-school tutoring
-Environmental education in the schools
-Youth sports and recreation
-Swimming instruction for all ages
-English tutoring for immigrants
-Resident and day camps
