| Our lives were forever changed five years ago when our son, Daniel, was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome and, later, FSGS. These conditions affect the kidneys’ filtering units and cause scar tissue to form, often leading to kidney failure. Because of this disease, Daniel’s teenage years have been filled with countless doctors’ appointments and hospital stays and he has continuously had to deal with the very difficult side effects caused by the medication he has taken to control and attempt to put his disease into remission. Through it all, he has remained an incredibly strong, courageous and positive young man. He is presently looking forward to his sophomore year in college, and is majoring in bio-medical engineering, no small feat considering the ongoing challenges with which he is dealing. In March of this year, he experienced renal failure and was then placed on dialysis three days a week. Recently we were blessed with the news that Daniel’s father, Tom, was a match and was able to donate his kidney to Daniel. The transplant took place on August 7, 2008. Within just a few weeks of the transplant we were given the devastating news that the FSGS, which caused his own kidneys to fail, had attacked the new kidney. Daniel is currently receiving plasmapheris treatments, in which his own blood plasma is exchanged for that of a donor, in the hope of putting the FSGS into remission.
There is no known cure for Nephrotic Syndrome/FSGS. The Nephcure Foundation is the only organization whose mission is to find the cause and cure for Nephrotic Syndrome and FSGS. Our hope is that through the Step Forward Walk on October 5th there will be an increased awareness of these little-known conditions and that sufficient funds will be raised to support much needed research to arrive at an eventual cure. |
