Who are the homeless?
Homelessness can happen to anyone. Job loss, domestic violence, insufficient wages, poor health, mental illness, substance abuse, lack of affordable housing and natural disasters are all major contributing factors.
Today in Houston and Harris County, an estimated 14,000 homeless men, women and children are living in shelters, abandoned buildings, encampments and on the streets. Many of them want to become productive citizens again, but they lack transportation, employment, childcare, housing, health care, and other basic resources.
Homeless, not hopeless…
SEARCH is the answer to their desperate need. Founded in 1989, SEARCH is a private, nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive services to help people experiencing homelessness get off the streets, into jobs and affordable housing. SEARCH serves more than 10,000 men, women and children annually, providing them with the tools to achieve self-sufficiency.
SEARCH was founded with the idea that homeless individuals and families need more than a meal and a place to sleep. They need a future. And SEARCH is working hard to provide that future—a brighter future for all in our community
What we do…
Resource Center Hot lunches, showers, laundry, mailing address, access to partner agencies’ services.
Mobile Outreach Program Life-saving resources for people on the streets: water, insect repellent, food, healthcare.
Healthcare Services Medical and dental clinics, psychiatric and substance abuse counseling.
Housing Programs Rental assistance, budgeting, life skills classes.
Employment Education Center Adult basic education, GED, skills training, employment services.
The WorkSource Partnership Job placement, career counseling and financial aid services to homeless men and women
The House of Tiny Treasures Houston’s only accredited early childhood development program exclusively serving homeless children, six weeks to six years of age
