| My name is Sylvia Firary and I am running the Big Sur 9 miler in Carmel, California on April 29, 2012 to raise awareness and money for HHT, a blood vessel disorder that has affected most of my immediate family. I have HHT, as do my two brothers and my two children. My mother, who died of an unrelated disorder in November of 2009, suffered with HHT for many years with frequent blood transfusions, iron infusions, hospitalizations, etc.
HHT is an inherited disease that affects over 1 million people worldwide. It is caused by defective blood vessels in the brain, lungs, liver, nose, skin, and intestines, and typically begins with nosebleeds during childhood. HHT is highly treatable but can result in serious health problems if not promptly diagnosed and treated.
