Over the past year, our political landscape has been mired in misconceptions about sexual violence; we’ve heard about “legitimate rape,” that “some girls rape easy,” and other harmful myths. The campaign season may be over, but at Rape Victim Advocates (RVA), we recognize that we still have a big fight in front of us, and we need you to join us. You can make an immediate impact today by supporting RVA, Chicago’s only independent rape crisis center. Every single day, RVA is working with survivors, providing free, comprehensive and compassionate crisis, advocacy and counseling services while also working to end sexual violence in Chicago and beyond.
In the coming year, RVA is working to meet increasing demand. Since the closing of another organization’s comprehensive rape crisis program in 2011, a large area of Chicago’s northside has gone without free advocacy, counseling and community-based education services. RVA is stepping in and establishing a new Northside Satellite Office in Ravenswood, with a full range of services for victims of sexual violence.
With the new office, we are able to offer bilingual Spanish counseling services, in addition to our existing bilingual advocacy services, ensuring that we can offer hope, healing and support to even more survivors. We have also added three hospitals to our crisis response; our hard-working volunteers and staff now respond to survivors in a total of 14 hospitals, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In the first ten months of this year, we responded to more survivors in the ER than we had in the same period last year.
A gift from you today will help ensure that RVA not only meets this increased demand for our crisis, legal and medical advocacy and counseling services, but also that we provide the same level of quality services to each and every survivor. Your generosity will make a tangible difference in RVA’s capacity to be here for any survivor in need, and to work with communities to empower them with education and awareness.
Whether in the hospital ER advocating for a victim, in the public eye debunking rape myths, in the classroom educating first responders on best practices, or in the counseling office helping survivors and their loved ones through the healing process, Rape Victim Advocates is here—24 hours a day, 7 days a week—for survivors, ensuring that they are believed and supported, and that their rights are protected. With you as our ally, we can continue to reach more survivors, break down barriers and work against sexual violence. A gift to RVA today, of any size, will make a difference in the lives of so many survivors and their loved ones in the coming months.
P.S. “RVA saved my life.” Countless survivors of sexual violence are impacted by your generosity. Please make a donation today.
