| To celebrate 10 years as a cancer survivor, I will be participating in my first ever triathlon at the Ryka Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon on August 19, 2007. Doug Ulman and Lance Armstrong celebrated their 10-year anniversaries with the New York marathon, so a triathlon only seemed fitting. And I'm always looking for an excuse to wear spandex in public.
During high school I was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer that occurs in about 200 people each year. In between surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, blood transfusions, and random other hospital stays for 14 months, I tried to be a normal teenager. However, there was not a lot of support for people my age who were stuck in treatment between kids and grandparents.
Doug Ulman experienced the same isolation about the same time I did and founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults to meet the needs of young adults with cancer. It is a great cause and I'm proud to work with the organization and sit on its board of directors.
I will challenge myself to swim, bike, and run (yikes). My challenge to you- donate (it's tax-deductible). I will match up to $1200, so make me do it.
Type in your donation amount in the box below and you can securely pay online with a credit card. Don't worry, if you don't want anyone to know who you are or how much you donated, you can keep the name and amount anonymous. Feel free to e-mail me at stargazer52@hotmail.com. |
