Those of you who knew him also know there is no way to capture him in a small space like this. I knew Tim for 40 years. He was an unusual guy who broke every mold there ever was! He was fearlessly direct and candid—the way too many of us are not, but wish we were. He touched every single person he encountered.

Tim loved life and loved it with abandon. He was a gifted publicists, a zealous boxer, a lover of all foods, a cherisher of his relationships with people, and passionate about so many causes, one well know to many of his friends--Crohn's-- and the other, not so well know to many.

The lesser known cause about which Tim was passionate was hospice care. Perhaps it was because of its personal intimacy that Tim valued it so much. In any event, he cared abut it. While at HBO, Tim played a pivotal role in helping to publicize HBO’s program: Letting Go: A Hospice Journey. That work led him to the network of friends and colleagues at the National Hospice Foundation. He was a steadfast friend of NHF for many many years.

When Tim became sick, he knew deep down that hospice care would be there for him, and when the time came, Tim selected Calvary Hospice in the Bronx. Most of the folks who saw him there would agree that the last five weeks he spent there were the best five weeks of the last year of his life. As a result, I am participating in The National Hospice Foundation’s Run to Remember program by running a race in Tim’s memory. The race is called the Bourbon Chase—a 200 mile relay along the old Bourbon Trail in Kentucky. Tim would have appreciated that—one of his favorite dinner “beverages” was a Manhattan.

Half of the net proceeds I raise will be directed to Calvary Hospice and the other half will remain at the National Hospice Foundation.
