Dana's 183.4 Miles to Save The MED
Keep The MED alive!
Welcome, everyone. Thank you for coming to my donation site. As many of you know, I have recently become addicted to endurance running. Last year, I was inspired by a series of articles published in Outside magazine's December issue on the theme of “adventure altruism,” the idea of turning a passion into a way to bring about change. As such, I set a goal to run one half marathon per month leading up to a full marathon in December (183.4 miles total). Unfortunately, during my May race, I broke my third metatarsal forcing me to postpone my goal for a few months. I ran the St. Jude half in December and felt ready to pursue my year of half marathons once again! I will begin in April with the Nashville Country Music half marathon. The beneficiary will still be the Regional Medical Center at Memphis also known as The MED. I currently volunteer in the Trauma unit and get to see first hand the funding hardships this hospital still faces.

The MED is a level-one trauma hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee - the only level-one trauma center serving Memphis and its 150-mile radius and is one of the nation’s three busiest trauma centers.

What people DON'T know is the MED provided $368 MILLION Charity Care to the residents of Memphis and the MidSouth. Life-and-death dramas play out 24/7 in the aged hallways of The Med, a hospital chartered back in 1829.

-- At The Med: The best trauma docs in America work day and night patching up gunshot wounds suffered by residents in one of America's most violent cities. The cost of treating gunshot patients at The Med runs to $25 million a year.

-- At The Med: The tiniest babies in Shelby County, a place where more preemies are born and die than anywhere else in the country, come to The Med to fight for their lives. The Med treated more than 1,300 premature or critically ill infants in 2009.

-- At The Med: The largest population of HIV/AIDS patients in Tennessee live in Greater Memphis and they use The Med as their last line of defense for dealing with these incurable maladies. The Med offers the most comprehensive treatment and counseling services of any hospital within 150 miles.
"We serve everybody," Trauma Center charge nurse Kerry Lyons said. "We don't ever ask about insurance. Our purpose is to take care of everybody."

For those who donate $75 or more, I would like to extend the opportunity to advertise your company or dedicate the races to a loved one. I am going to have a shirt made to wear to all of the races. You can dedicate a race to a loved one and I will put their name on the shirt, OR I will put your company logo on the shirt as well as on my Blog/donation website. If you are interested, please send an e-mail to dwhitmor@memphis.edu. First come first serve, as I don't wear an XL shirt and will eventually run out of space :)

Please help me keep the doors of The MED open by donating. Every donation will make a difference and encourage me during the 12 races this year.

Visit my blog to read about the journey and to see a list of races I will be running this year. www.nhmjhm.blogspot.com

Thank You for Donating!

Sincerely, Dana Lynn Whitmore
