| Run for Congo Women - Ann Arbor |
|
| Today, eastern Congo is caught in an epidemic of appalling sexual violence, as militias use rape as a military tactic to destroy communities and exert control over natural resources. Since 1996, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has played host to the world's deadliest conflict since World War II.
More than 5.4 million people have died.
Women are targeted daily for gang rape, torture, and sexual slavery. Yet we don't talk about the Congo.
Never heard of this conflict? You aren't alone. Most people haven't. It receives almost no news coverage.
Run for Congo is a grassroots global movement raising awareness and sponsorships for Congolese survivors of sexual violence through Women for Women International's Congo program. For $27/ month we sponsor a war affected woman with support groups, rights awareness, job training, literacy, and other training, as well money to use at her discretion, and we can exchange letters with her, as pen-pals.
I am raising $650 to sponsor 2 Congolese women for 1 year. I will be pen pals with my sponsored women, and I will post their letters on my facebook page, so you can learn more about their lives. Please support me and my 2 Congolese sisters by pledging $10, $20, or $50 today. My mom and I will be will be running for the cause in the Burns Park 5K Run on May 2, 2010. Thank you for your support!! |
