Help Jes Schultz Borland help Ray of Hope!
If you've made it to this page, you probably know me. If not, let me tell you a little bit about me.
My name is Jes.
I'm five feet tall.
I like punk rock.
I'm a geek.
I'm a runner.
I like to help people.

No, let me rephrase those last two:
I LOVE to run.
I LOVE to help people.

I get to combine those two passions on Sunday, October 9, 2011. I'll be running the Portland Half Marathon to support Ray of Hope (http://www.rayofhopeinternational.org/). This organization helps two villages in Kenya - Bware and Kawangware. They provide basic health education, provide school children with supplies, give desks to the schools, and operate the ROH Clinic and Community Center in a large urban slum.
What stands out most for me, though, is their support of education. "Partnering with the 6 schools in Bware, ROH has facilitated the opening of a teachers computer learning center, the renovation of a school space for a library, donations of textbooks, school supplies and desks". Education is one of the most important things we can provide for children.
How can you help?

I have committed to raising $750, but I am hoping to exceed that. I encourage you to visit the Ray of Hope website to see the health and education their projects and services provide. To put your donation in perspective, please consider the following:
$20 = a week’s worth of coffee from Starbucks
Labor support and nourishment to a woman delivering at the Bware Maternity Center.
$25 = a pedicure or manicure (OK, guys, a pizza and pitcher of beer to watch a game)
Water for one week at the ROH Clinic and Learning Center in Kawangware. Yes, a whole week.
$50 = a new pair of jeans
School supplies for one primary school classroom for one term. What does it cost to buy school supplies for one child in the US?
$100 = Two tickets for a day at Six Flags
The monthly salary for an HIV/AIDS Outreach worker in Kawangware. Yes, monthly.
$250 = an iPod Touch
The cost of a Girls Empowerment Seminar for 100 girls in a rural community. Empowering young females...one hundred of them!

Please consider supporting me and Ray of Hope when I run on Sunday, October 9!

You can make a donation on this page. If you would prefer to donate by cash or check, please make checks payable to "Ray of Hope" and return to me by September 30, 2011.
Join the Ray of Hope Marathon Team in “supporting the children of Kenya one step at a time”.

The Ray of Hope Foundation is dedicated to creating grassroots community based projects that improve education, infrastructure and health services for children and their families in Kenya. Our projects are guided by the aspirations and self-identified needs of the communities in our project areas. We provide secondary school sponsorship, train traditional birth attendants and health workers, assist women to start microfinance programs and improve infrastructure (wells, classrooms, clinics, school supplies and medical equipment/supplies).

The Ray of Hope is an official Portland Marathon Charity. Contributions sponsoring a runner/walker of the Ray of Hope Marathon Team directly support our innovative grassroots programming serving hundreds of children and their families in both the urban slums and rural areas of Kenya.
