| Reflections on “The Ride for Semper Fi” Oct. 14-17, 2009
We accomplished our goal and then some. Saturday we presented a check for $147,250.00 to The Semper Fi Fund for injured Marines and sailors. That’s not all…as donations continue there will be more. I’m certain the total donated will exceed $150,000.00!!!! I understand that to date, this is the 2nd largest fundraiser for The Semper Fi Fund. A huge THANKS to all supporters for your encouragement, good wishes, and donations.
The 4 days of cycling were long, very hot, and at times, very difficult. As riders, support crew, and friends, we came together as a team to accomplish exceeding the goal. I have many memories which I know will stay with me forever. I wish each and every one of you could have come along on the journey. Every day, there was a time of tears, not from physical pain but from learning of one or more Marines, and their sacrifice for us. The following are highlights of each day.
Day One: We assembled at the North Scottsdale DNA store in preparation for takeoff. There was a ceremony followed by a police escort out of town. The most memorable portion of the ceremony was hearing Ronnie Porta speak. Ronnie and his family emigrated to the US when he was young. As a high school senior, he was offered a soccer scholarship to college. He was so appreciative of what this country had offered his family, that he chose to join the Marines to serve with plans to attend college afterwards. The unthinkable happened and Ronnie was very seriously wounded. His whole body was badly burned and one arm amputated. He has gone thru 91 surgeries with more to follow. Ronnie's Mother joined him to see us off. They both exhibited very positive attitudes and great appreciation for what we are doing. At one point, Ronnie commented that seeing all the support that he has received from our community, he “would do it all over again”. Amazing!
Day Two: Following a 112 mile day, another 108 or so to do on day 2. On this evening, we were treated to a formal presentation. LtCol Paul Thompson, fellow team rider, and pilot in the Air Force, shared a slideshow and told us of his experiences. As a pilot, his job is to get the wounded flown out to safety. The back of his plane will serve as a triage. Many of his missions are voluntary..he doesn’t have to accept them, but he does. Another amazing person and American hero. Departing with us on this journey, were several previously injured Marines and an active duty Marine, Major Bill Connor.
Each year, the ride is dedicated to fallen soldiers. This year we dedicated the ride to Maj. R Mendoza, Maj. D Zembiec, Maj. M McClung, and LCDR E Kristensen. On this evening, Major Connor shared with us what he knew of these soldiers. 2 of the 4 were close, personal friends of his. Another teary time as the reality of these lost lives became much more personal. An interesting tidbit of this day, the Major rode in his combat boots, helmet, and fatigues, 108 miles! Of course, he never complained. Oh, by the way, he is participating in The Marine Corps Marathon this weekend! Here’s the link to his site for donations and information: http://www.active.com/donate/teamsemperfi09/Rifleman17750
Day 3 The mountain day…
This was a tough day, physically, as we made our way up into the mountains. We stayed that evening in Julian, Ca., where we were joined by more Marines and Navy soldiers, both active duty and injured/retired. Another evening of sharing stories. Carla, the female officer who joined us, was close to Maj. McClung (the female officer, died in battle, and being honored on this ride) and shared her memories of her good friend. More tears.
Day 4 The final ride into Balboa Medical Center
Police escorted us to the Medical Center to a cheering crowd of family and friends. A huge check was presented to The Semper Fi Fund. I’ll never forget the amazing individuals that I met. The young Marines and their pride and willingness to serve. I’ll never forget them….Thanks for your generous support! |
