| Run for Congo Women - Congo |
|
Upon learning of the devastating impacts of war on the women of the Congo, Lisa Shannon founded Run for Congo Women, a run/walk fundraiser to support Women for Women International's Congo program.
Lisa has since traveled to the Congo and met many of the "sisters" that have been able to participate in Women for Women International's year-long program because of Run for Congo Women. Over the course of that year, they learned marketable job skills, became aware of their rights, shared their experiences with other women, and received direct aid to help rebuild their lives.
Life for these women remains challenging as the conflict persists. But in a remarkable show of selflessness, many of them have decided that they, too, want to Run for Congo Women. They want other women in their community to have the opportunity to learn and share and grow - just like they did. They know that stronger women means stronger communities and, ultimately, a stronger Congo.
On February 28, Lisa Shannon will accompany them as they run the inaugural Run for Congo Women in Congo.
Below are their voices - hopeful, generous, grateful. Please donate to support their effort, or set up a fundraising page and rally your friends and family behind them as well!
"Just as you always run to change my life, I want to run to change the lives of other women. My running in my disabled state will encourage other people to join." -Generose (pictured, left)
"I would love to run in order to raise money to sponsor other women. The situation we are in is bad. You helped change my life." -Furaha (pictured, center)
"I would like to run because it will benefit the women who are really needy, so they can get out of hardships and become aware of good things. I thank American women so much for their devotion, and I encourage them to keep supporting us!" -Francine (pictured, right)
Funds raised here benefit the entirety of Women for Women International's Congo program. If you would like to sponsor an individual woman, please visit www.womenforwomen.org. |
