| Remembering Katherine Campaign |
|
| The Katherine Miller Campaign was begun in 2007 to raise funds for a biennial symposium on Young Adult Cancer at Des Moines University.
The inaugural Katherine M. Miller symposium for Cancer in Young Adults was held on February 15, 2007. The second conference took place on September 24, 2008 and the third conference will be given on November 2, 2010. Conference topics range from understanding the biological mechanisms of cancer in young adults, to coping with a diagnosis of cancer, to meeting the psychosocial needs of the young cancer patient. Every second year, the conference welcomes experts and advocates in the field of AYA oncology to Des Moines to address medical students and DMU faculty, alongside the general public and current cancer patients.
The conference’s most important feature is a panel of young people who are undergoing treatment for cancer. These young adults respond to questions from physicians, medical students and audience members in order to convey their experience and raise awareness of early symptoms, life disruptions caused by chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, and the types of issues which accompany survivorship.
The conference is named for Katherine Marguerite Miller, who was a first year student of osteopathic medicine at DMU when she was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. In March, 2005, Katherine left Des Moines to start treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City. Katherine’s dream of becoming a doctor was cut short by her tragic death in September, 2005 at the age of 26. Please contact the Miller Family at rememberingkatherine@gmail.com for more information about Katherine or to get involved with any aspect of the conference. |
