| My name is Kevin Martin. I am 11 years old and I was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis (type 1) when I was 2 years old. Three years later I was also diagnosed with dwarfism. Being a dwarf means I will be smaller than other people. But having NF1 means I have risks of a lot of health problems. Right now, I have a big tumor that goes from my jaw down into my lungs. It can't be removed easily because it grows on my nerves and veins, so if the doctors take out the tumor, they also would need to take out some of my nerves. My doctor said that's not a good idea right now. There is some chance the tumor could turn into cancer, but I try not to think about that because it makes me sad. I also have a hard time walking because my leg muscles are not very strong, so I use a scooter to get around most places. I know the Children's Tumor Foundation is working hard to raise money that can help find ways to treat and cure NF. Last year I was an NF Hero and went to Daytona and saw how many people are affected by NF, and also how many people are working hard to help me and other people like me. I also know that because NF affects so many parts of the body, research on NF helps with research into so many other disorders -- like cancer and heart disease. Thank you for helping me and the Children's Tumor Foundation raise money to keep this important research going! |
