| My name is D.J. and I have Neurofibromatosis type 1. (NF1) NF is a chronic and progressive condition, and there is no cure. When I was born, no one in my family had ever heard of NF, now it has become a part of our daily lives. Everyone is affected differently by NF. For me it means I have lots of doctor appointments in order for me to stay healthy. Sometimes I have up to 30 doctors appointments a year. I have 4 brain tumors, 2 tumors in my heart, and had a Plexiform tumor removed form my leg. Thankfully they are benign. I also have Pseudoarthrosis which means my Tibia and Fibula are curved. I need to wear a brace to keep it from fracturing. When I was younger the doctors told my family they weren't sure how much I would be able to do as I got older, but I keep surpassing all their expectations. 14 years ago, there also wasn't as much awareness of NF and it was hard to find support and information anywhere. Over the years many people have worked very hard to help people become more knowledlgeable about NF through fundraising for research to help find a cure. It has also allowed families to connect through camps, support groups, and community events. All the money I raise will help to raise awareness about NF, as well as research to find treatments and a cure NF. Please help us in finding a cure! |
