2007 Macon County Outstanding Student /Character Award Winner |
|
|
| My name is Dallas Henderson, and I have Neurofibromatosis Type 1.
I was diagnosis with NF1 at the ripe old age of two. Although I don’t look like it, I am 10 years old. NF affects how I walk, causes my speech and developmental delays and has caused my spine to curve. I have to wear a very hard and uncomfortable back brace every single day, as well as braces on my legs; I can walk with my walker but get tired easy so I go to my wheelchair. I am hard to understand sometimes but I understand you perfectly.
I am 4th grade student at Tuskgee Public Elementary School, in Tuskegee, Alabama. In 2007 I was 1 of 100 students in my county to receive an award for outstanding students. When I am not at school or the doctors, I love to play baseball for the East Alabama Miracle League My team is the Dodgers and we have a brand new ball field just for us special kids.
I have three big brothers, two even bigger sisters, two girlfriends and a disabled puppy named Mimi (she’s evil!) I love Arizona Green Tea, rice with lots of gravy, blue lollipops, chocolate chip cookies and “SpongeBob SquarePants” is my favorite TV show.
In 1998, before I was born ,my big brother Jeremiah was born with an unknown disorder that hospitalized him for the first 18 months of his life. He came home to enjoy his family and a new surprise addition ME!! I was diagnosed with NF1 in 2001. Jeremiah went to heaven in 2003. Bad things can happen to people with NF. Can you help us solve the puzzle?
People all over the world are fighting battles of all kinds to save the children, this is one more that we need your help to fight. We need treatment, we need options, we need a cure. Please, help us solve the NF puzzle!
