| Our names are Conrad and Margarita Cordova and we live in Tucson, Arizona. Our daughter Marisol was just a few weeks old when she was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis (NF1). Conrad was diagnosed with NF1 soon after, not knowing that he’d had this disorder his entire life.
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a common neurological disorder that can cause tumors to grow anywhere in or on the body. NF can result in cancer, blindness, deafness, bone deformities, loss of limb, and scoliosis. Many people with NF have learning disabilities. Even though many people have never heard of NF, it is more prevalent than cystic fibrosis & muscular dystrophy combined. It strikes one in every 3,000 births, and affects people of all races and ethnic origins throughout the world.
Marisol is now 8 years old and in the 3rd grade. She is a bright, funny, sweet, and loving little "princess" who loves Hanna Montana and loves to sing along with her songs. She does fairly well in school despite some academic challenges. Marisol loves gymnastics, playing with her dog, computer games, and all the Disney movies. She has a 6 year old brother Emilio who is her "best friend" in the world.
Marisol's only identified problem is a delay in her speech and language development for which she gets speech therapy regularly. Through a support network we founded, we have met many families with children just like Marisol. Some of these children have serious complications such as brain & spinal cord tumors, limb amputations, and learning disabilities.
These children as well as our own, is our motivation, inspiration, and calling, leading us to reach out to others and raise awareness about NF. Sadly, in 2008 and 2009, we have lost several friends across the country that battled courageously against this disorder.
In 2007, we ran a half-marathon to raise money for The Children's Tumor Foundation. In 2010, we hope to raise money through our 2nd annual Racing4Research fundraiser to help ensure a better future for all with NF. As a family, we are committed to helping others who also suffer from this challenging disorder.
