| Many of you have lost someone to cancer. Sadly, this is not unique.
What is unique is the concept of me running ... anywhere, for anything at anytime. I am not a runner. I am not even a jogger or walker!
I have chosen, after a lot of thought to train for this race because I have been touched by cancer. I have lost people to cancer... and this particular cancer, Pancreatic Cancer has a different story in our family.
My hero, my mother, my friend was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in November of 2006 - a total fluke that they found it at all *miracle*...
After surgery and 18+ months of complications, struggle, anger, strife, pain, endless hospital stays, sadness, vague reports, new side effects, Doctor's visits *you name it* we have watched my Mom FIGHT AND SURVIVE Pancreatic Cancer. This is virtually unheard of. Only 4% of people that even get diagnosed, survive. It is silent and deadly.
I haven't had a minute to deal with the impact of the last 18+ months. We as a family and with our friends have come together to take shifts, bring hope, prayer, food, company, laughter and tears... we just had to get Mom to the next day. And she’s here. She’s amazing and strong. We are so lucky!
So, this race... is me letting it all out... through training and running - something I have never done. I am going to cry and get pissed, I am going to run and be thankful that my hero is still here. I am going to feel the pain physically but because I am lucky... I can RUN... I can do this!
I hope you will support me, not only financially (so we can get more research done) but with your presence! I hope you will walk, wiggle, ride, stroll, and crawl the race with me. You are invited to Denver on September 1, 2008 for the race. Let’s celebrate LIFE... FAMILY... FRIENDS and SURVIVAL!
With Gratitude,
Ashley |
