| My friend Kate has stage four pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer in the United States. In fact, pancreatic cancer, or as Kate refers to it, pc, is the fourth leading cause of death among all cancers, yet it hardly receives any research money, publicity, or attention. At the same time Kate was diagnosed with cancer, I sustained a severe ankle injury, which required surgery in June 2007. What was supposed to take 6 weeks to recover from has taken over one year. Incredibly, shortly after my surgery and while she was going through a series of chemo treatments herself, Kate visited me several times, lifted my spirits, and brought a smile to my face during my recovery. That is the kind of quality person and friend Kate is, and I am grateful for our friendship.
The connection to running? 10 years ago Kate allowed me to run with her before work as I was trying to get into shape, and I caught the running bug and have been an avid runner ever since. I am running the 2009 National Marathon in support of Kate with the hope that a cure for pc can be found soon so that we can run together once again. |
