Operation Jump Start (OJS) empowers and enables disadvantaged Long Beach youth to excel academically, graduate from high school and go on to college. Operation Jump Start meets its mission through a unique long-term mentoring program, enrichment programs that inspire college bound pursuits, and supportive services to meet the holistic needs of our students and their families, such social work services and educational case management. The distinctiveness of Operation Jump Start lies with our trained community volunteers who serve as mentors to disadvantaged students for the duration of their junior and high school academic careers (grades 8 through 12), an amazing period of five years!
Founded in 1994, Operation Jump Start (OJS) was started by community leaders who envisioned a day when all Long Beach children would have an equal opportunity to pursue a college education and no longer be limited by cultural or socio-economic circumstances. Operation Jump Start continues their important work by providing a solution to the economic and social despair that challenges Long Beach adolescents every day.
Ultimately, the most important consideration of Operation Jump Start’s work does not lie in the number of programs but in its effectiveness. For OJS graduates: 100% receive their high school diploma, 96% go on to college (with 100% going to college in 2006) and 75% go to a four-year college directly (in 2006, 90% will attend four-year universities.)
By supporting OJS, you can help students attain the dream of higher education by helping them move beyond their impoverished environments to ensure their full social and economic participation in the future, building better lives for themselves, their families and ultimately their communities. |
