| The Marathon Project |
|
| The Marathon Project is an after-school training program that pairs adult mentors with at-risk youth to reduce risk factors such as childhood obesity, school drop-out and substance abuse. The Marathon Project provides opportunities for students to set and achieve goals, explore avenues for character development, improve health, and build positive relationships through mentoring. In the past, the Marathon Project kids have trained for one of the great American races, the Philadelphia Marathon. In 2010, however, severe funding cuts have made that race not only an incredible fitness challenge but also a financial one. Because of this, the tenacious training required of the Marathon Project kids and mentors is only half the battle; fundraising is the only way the kids, many of whom have not left their neighborhood, will reach their ultimate goal of finishing a Marathon—even if they do train hard enough.
The Marathon Project kids and mentors are thrilled to be named Official Charity of the 2010 Ragnar Relay New York. We see it as an opportunity to show the nationally-acclaimed Ragnar Relay Series runners, race officials, and supporters what the Marathon Project is capable of—and that we are a cause worthy of your support. |
