| The story of Gabriel Colucci and Nephrotic Syndrome
When our son, Gabriel, was diagnosed in 1996, we, my husband Dominic and I, were beside ourselves. There was not a doctor to be found in New Jersey with the expertise of pediatric nephrology. After days and days of being falsely diagnosed, my son was finally referred to Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC to run tests. When arriving there, our two year old was listless, pale, low temp, swollen all over his body, especially around his little eyes, and hadn't urinated since the day before. That entire evening at the hospital was changing diapers one after another, for they, the doctors, started him on an IV of lasix, a dierectic. By morning my little boy was a bruised mess. We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Isabelle Roberti and Dr. Lewis Reisman that morning and they in fact gave me the diagnosis of Nephrotic Syndrome. What in the world is that I thought. There was not a support group to turn to, a person who knew what I was talking about, or a book to reference the disease. I went straight to church and sat and cried. Years later, after so many bouts with this kidney syndrome, hospital visits, peritonitis, blood transfusions, dehydration, edema, I came across the Nephcure Foundation located on the internet, the only foundation dedicated to finding a cure for NS and better the treatment. My son was nine when we met Dr. Kenneth Lieberman, of Hackensack Medical Center. He introduced Gabriel to Cytoxan, a chemotherapy drug to put his Nephrotic Sydrome in remission. Now 15, Gabriel has been in remission for over 5 years. Shortly following, I joined the NephCure Foundation starting the North Jersey Chapter. Reading others stories, I realized that there were people out there in my shoes and some much worse than us. Join me and our Team Colucci on October 11, 2009, at the OverPeck Park in Leonia, NJ, 9:00am start up, and step with us to make a difference. Thank you. |
