In the fall of 2006, Theo was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis (NF1). NF is a genetic condition that causes benign tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. Affecting one in every 3,000 births, NF is more prevalent than Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Huntington's disease, and Tay Sachs combined.
Theo's journey with NF has entailed two surgeries in his brain stem area and ongoing monitoring of existing growths. NF is unpredictable. To date there are few effective treatments and there is no cure. We intend to change that.
The members of Team Theo are his parents, Carol and Murray McCartan and the following friends of the McCartan family: Steve McPherson, fitness phenom; Todd Smalley, friend since seventh grade; Sean Faulk, marathon extremist; Jeremiah Collins, church and long run co-hort; Tim Pollis, the region's finest T-Ball coach; Katy McGrane, triathlete extraordinaire; and the C.L. and Kristine Delfs family.
See Wildwood Builders.
Events that Team Theo members will be participating include: The Lifetime Fitness Indoor Triathlon; the Get in Gear 5K, 10K; the Celebration of Children's 5K; the Minneapolis Marathon; the Green Mountain Relay; the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon; the Bemidji Triathlon, the Urban Wildland 5K and Half Marathon; the St. Paul Triathlon; Chicago Triathlon: and the Twin Cities Marathon and events.
Your support of Team Theo funds life-changing research and will enrich the lives of individuals and families touched by NF.
