| Please help us find a cure for the many children suffering from the debilitating, disfiguring, painful and lifelong consequences of Neurofibromatosis (NF). We are in awe of our brave son Hayden who is afflicted by this disease. Hayden is only seven years old yet he has already undergone more physical and psychological challenges than most of us will experience in our lifetime. He has multiple brain tumors, a spinal cord tumor, an infiltrating tumor on his shoulder and numerous small tumors developing on nerves under his skin. Hayden also suffers from learning disabilities, difficulties with eating and swallowing, is significantly underweight, vomiting and headaches (likely from increased inter-cranial pressure), constant pain and itching, fatigue and concentration issues, generalized weakness and significant gross and fine motor deficiencies due to NF.
In an attempt to treat the brain tumors that pose a risk to his life, Hayden has had 18 months of chemotherapy. It was not successful (all the tumors continued to show signs of growth and in addition he grew another brain tumor while on chemo). Therefore, Hayden undergoes MRIs under anesthetic every three months to monitor their growth (we have been told by oncologists that Hayden will be on and off chemotherapy for the rest of his life). When the tumors grow again, Hayden’s next course of treatment will probably be a clinical trial drug. We live in fear of what will happen as Hayden gets older as tumor growth typically accelerates during puberty and NF is a progressive disease with no fixed path of clinical presentation. There is no cure for NF. Please help us fund new treatments for Hayden and millions of other children afflicted with this shockingly under-resourced disease.
We have decided to form a team to ride the 200+ miles from Seattle to Portland on July 17/18, 2010 to experience what is likely a small fraction of the pain and fatigue that our Hayden experiences on a daily basis. We dearly hope you will join us, and the rest of our courageous team (“Hayden’s Team”) in supporting research that will ultimately benefit Hayden and two million other children around the world. Thank you so much for your support and generosity. Oh, and for those of you with employer 'matching gift' programs, please don't forget to ask for your donation to be matched by your employer!
