Fighting for a cure .....Running towards the future!

Her strength is inspiring, Her heart is courageous, Her smile keeps me going.

Our daughter Mavia who is 19 months old, has Neurofibromatosis(NF 1). NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow anywhere on or in the body along the nerves.It can also cause learning disabilities,bone disfigurement,scoliosis,blindness,epilepsy,and many more. This disease can be passed down from a parent or can be a result of a "spontaneous genetic mutation". In Mavia's case it is spontaneous. 1 in every 3,000 children are born with NF.

We first discovered Mavia had NF when she began to show one of the first common signs, cafe au leit spots (light brown spots resembling birthmarks). Recently Mavia had an MRI that showed a potential glioma in the cerebral peduncle area of the brain. We are watching it and following up with more MRI's , meeting with oncology/hematology and our neurologist,Dr. Gutmann of Washington University in St. Louis Missouri.If there is any changes, we will begin treatment which will consist of chemotherapy. Because the tumors from NF grow intertwined in the nerves most are inoperable. Chemo is mainly used to stabilize the growth of the tumors. Despite all of the doctor appointments and waiting , Mavia is a champ! She has a smile that will melt your heart and more energy than anyone I know. She is my hero and my inspiration.

We are hoping for a miracle. Along with all other parent's of children with NF and individuals with NF themselves, we hope for a cure. The Children's Tumor Foundation is one of the leading foundations in helping to end the NF puzzle through research and I believe they will. So,how can you help? Along with myself and my husband Ryan we are pledging to run in three events this year, in honor of Mavia, the big one in San Jose,CA., by donating to The Children's Tumor Foundation(non-profit 501(c)(3) medical foundation), you are not only helping Mavia, but thousands of others with NF. The more money we raise the closer we are to getting answers and finding a cure. Please help my family and I raise funds for Neurofibromatosis research as well as helping to raise awareness.Be a part of something that can change the lives of so many,something that can bring hope for Mavia and the rest of those that suffer from NF.
