| My son Gabriel was diagnosed with NF1 when he was six months old. For most of his life, he seemed to beat the odds. Although he had macrocephaly, minor bone deformities and many sub-dermal tumors, he was a brilliant, funny college graduate. It wasn't until he died by suicide last year that I learned 33 percent of NF patients experience psychiatric symptoms and that the suicide rate for NF patients is significantly higher than for the general population.
I'll never know what role, if any, NF played in Gabe's death. Nonetheless, I'm walk/jogging the New York City Half-Marathon on August 16th to raise awareness so that other families might be alerted to these possibilities. CTF was there for me, providing encouragement and information throughout Gabriel's life. Now it's my turn to be there for CTF. My goal is to raise $1000 and finish the race in 2.5 hours. You can follow my progress at the NF Endurance Team blog. Thanks for your support! |
