Its that time of year again, time for the NF Endurance Team to hit the Long Beach Marathon! I am back this year as a Team Captain, and need your help to reach my goal of raising $5000 for CTF!
Last year I ran the 5K in 24:36, not bad for a chick with too many brain tumors to count! A lot of my friends and family joined me on the course, it was emotional to all have a common goal in this fight to end NF. We all ran different races, but we crossed the same finish line!
The Children's Tumor Foundation is a great cause which focuses on finding a cure for all 3 forms of Neurofibromatosis. I have NF2, which is a debilitating neurological disorder that causes brain and spine tumors to grow. My Grandma Norma, Mom, and Uncle Eric were all paralyzed and deaf before having their lives tragically taken by NF2. I was diagnosed as a baby and have had brain surgery, multiple spine surgeries, radiation therapy and am now deaf and suffer from chronic pain and disequilibrium. My son JT is only 8 years old and is already vision impaired by NF2. At this point the only way I know how to fight, is to RUN. If we don't fight back we can't expect to win!
In the last year I have had a lot of growth in all of my tumors. In February I ran the Surf City ½ marathon with several members of the NF Endurance Team and clocked in at 2:05! After the race I went straight to the ocean and soaked my cramping legs in the beautiful icy Pacific. The following week I had Gamma Knife radiation surgery on 4 brain tumors, and then just 2 months later I had Cyberknife on 3 spine tumors. I won’t know if they have stopped growing until my bi-annual MRIs in July, but I refuse to sit around and wait. I prefer to assume those tumors are now dead, and focus my energy on living my life. Many days I start to run and just feel tired, but I remind myself why I run and never give up. Running keeps me stronger so I can fight back, it distracts me from my fears, and it gives me a way to fight back by raising money for research. I truly do…
RuNFor A Reason!
The only way I can beat this disorder for myself and my children is to achieve our pipe dream of a drug treatment for NF2 tumor growth. How do we reach that goal? We support the Children’s Tumor Foundation!
We are running for a cause, and make no mistake about it, we are making a difference with every step!!
The NFET is the largest CTF program funding NF research; indeed all donations to the NF Endurance Team are restricted for use in the CTF science and research programs. For more specific information please visit our Team Fundraising Dollars at Work!!
