TEAM KATE' FIRST BIG RACE IS COMPLETE! Our first distance event was a wild success. We (Team Kate) got to meet other members running for CTF on the NF Marathon Team and we all had a successful and enjoyable run.
As to date we have raised over $17,000 for the Children's Tumor Foundation's NF research intiatives. We will be in our second event for CTF, the Callaway Gardens (Georgia) Duathalon, on Mother's Day (May 13). After this point you may donate to CTF, but not in our name. Members of Team Kate will continue to run distance events to show support of the NF Marathon Team, and we plan subsequent fundraising efforts within the next few years.
BACKGROUND: The Seader Family joined the NF Marathon Team of the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) to raise money for NF research efforts. The NF Marathon Team participates in distance events to raise awareness of and funding for NF. Team Kate's first run as part of the NF Marathon Team was in the Atlanta ING 1/2-Marathon on March 25, 2007.
Kate was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type II at 15 and lost all hearing between ages 18 and 20. This subtype of Neurofibromatosis occurs in only 1:40,000 births. NFII is one of three genetically related diseases within the Neurofibromatosis (NF) group, all of which cause the growth of numerous nerve-related tumors, the growth of which can lead to deafness, sight impairment, balance dysfunction, and muscular impairment. There is no cure . . . Yet.
We wanted to do something to help others with NF. Please join us in our efforts to help find relief for all with NF by donating to this worthy cause.
If you would like to contribute to the CTF in our name, please click "MAKE A DONATION" at top right. If you wish to donate via postal mail, please send a check or money order to: Children's Tumor Foundation, ATTN: NF Marathon Team, 95 Pine Street, 16th Floor, NY, NY 10005. Please include TEAM KATE's Runner ID # GA-3187-07 on your check or money order. This ID verifies that you are contributing in our name. Note that the runner ID only must be included when making donations through postal mail (but not when making online donations).
Contributions in ANY amount are greatly appreciated and needed! Whether you give one dollar or a million, you are helping us win. Your donation DOES make a difference. Your donation is tax-deductible and will directly fund NF research projects funded through CTF.
Our goal is to raise awareness of NF. We run for those NF patients who no longer have the ability to run, and we run because we know that we must make the best of every day. If you are unable to financially contribute, we ask for your prayers. Please spread the word of the devastating effects of NF and our efforts to raise awareness.
For more information, call Teri Seader at (706) 860-3818 or email kjseader@yahoo.com. Click "Home Page" at top left to go to the CTF website.
The Seader family and all those affected by NF sincerely thank you.
~Team Kate
UPDATE! January 2007--Kate's friend Sarah (Campbell) Seabolt joined "Team Kate" in mid-January and ran with us in March. Sarah and Kate met as freshman at UGA, and knew each other for only three months before Kate's first major battle with NFII. Sarah was a true friend during this difficult time and continues to be. Thank you, Sarah!
More updates! Feb. 2007--Kate's "stress fracture" is actually a tumor in the calf. She's been medically cleared to run and she felt no tumor-related pain during the Atlanta run. This development will be closely followed in the proceeding months. UPDATE: March 16: "Riverside Runs for Research"--an all-night team relay run event put on by the RMS soccer teams was a huge success. "Riverside Runs for Research" is a further effort to raise further funding for CTF-sponsored NF research. "Team Kate Week" was subsequently celebrated by the entire school. RMS raised over $6000 themselves for CTF!
UPDATE: We are joined by Matt and Steve who will do the duathalon with us. Thanks!
