Thank you for supporting me in my personal challenge to complete the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon on July 15, while raising money and awareness for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (CCFA)! Through Team Challenge, I have committed to raising $3,900 to help the estimated 1.4 million Americans living with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. A minimum of 82 cents per dollar raised by CCFA goes directly to research and patient support. Your tax-deductible contribution will go toward curing Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, and improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.

Dear friends and family,

As most of you know I am in the middle of training for my second half-marathon this July. What many of you may not know is that I am running for a cause; one that is very personal, Crohn’s Disease. I was diagnosed with the disease in 1999 after close to 2 years of testing and seeing almost every specialist in Atlanta. For those of you that are not familiar with Crohn’s or Colitis, they are awful debilitating diseases.

When I first started getting sick in late 1997, I though what most in my situation do. “it must be something I ate or my diet in general”. But when the pain didn’t go away, I knew it was something more serious. I started by seeing my doctor and got started on your typical gastrointestinal medications, none of which seemed to help.

After 3 months of these medications I saw my first specialist and began what seemed like an endless cycle of being shuffled back and forth without getting any formal diagnosis. I was told it was my diet, stress, my sexual orientation and it was all in my head. I knew I was sick, but it started to seem like nobody believed me. The disease had gotten so bad and out of control I was forced to leave my job, I was also taking the upwards of 25 pills a day, just to get out of bed.

Finally in the fall of 1999 I finally made an appointment with a specialist outside of my network; a young gastroenterologist that took a more aggressive approach. It wasn’t until meeting this new doctor that I had ever heard of Crohn’s and Colitis; and once we did repeated all the test, I finally had a name to put to the disease that had basically ruled my life for almost 2 years.

The doctor came into the room and started to explain my symptoms to me, all I could do I nod my head in amazement and when she said “it basically feels like you’re trying to pass a bowling ball through your colon” I knew she got it. Then she told me what I had; I had Crohn’s Disease (to this day, I swear I heard angels singing). I had it, I had something that I could tell people, I had a real disease with a real name; and that’s when I broke into tears.

That is why I am running this July. I am running to help raise funds to go toward putting an end to Crohn’s and Colitis. I am helping in putting an end to the suffering that people like me have to go through, not just to get diagnosed, but on a daily basis.

So, please, won’t you help me by donating what you can? Your contribution will not only make a difference in my life but in the lives of so many living with these diseases while increasing awareness and fund further research.

Love and thanks,
