| When I first found out that I had colitis, I was very confused and felt alone. I had never heard of the disease before and didn't know what to expect. After doing some research, I realized I was not alone. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis effect more than 1.4 million Americans. Despite this staggering statistic, it was still hard to believe I was one of them.
Let's face it, it's not easy to talk about this condition. Trust me, you do not want a detailed description of a colitis flare. I can spare you the details, but I want you to know that this disease is, at times, completely debilitating and humiliating, it is painful and exhausting. It is not supposed to be a part of my life. But, it is. I am living with it and I want to find a cure!
In the three years since my diagnosis, I have spent more time in hospitals, with doctors and in bed than I ever thought I would. It has been an arduous, uphill battle, but I feel like I have finally reached the summit...and the views from up here are amazing! I have been "healthy" for more than three months now, the longest I have been healthy in years; yes, years. When I look in the mirror, I finally see me looking back, not a weakened shell of myself. I see more beauty in the world--not being trapped in bed all day certainly helps!
With this, comes my desire to participate in this race, to participate and to finish! I can't do it without your help though. Every dollar you give is one step closer to my goal....and it will only take me 4,000 steps to get there. Will you help me take the 4,000 steps to Napa by helping me raise $4,000?
I am running this race because, finally, I can. I am running this race to raise awareness. I am running this race to find a cure. I am running this race because I am tired of always running to the bathroom!

I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something I can do.
