Raising awareness about this shitty disease
I couldn't resist the irony! My dad was diagnosed with Crohn's in March of 2001. Like most people, I had never heard of this disease, but I knew it must be serious if it could reduce my big, strong dad to tears in a hospitol bed. He took handfuls of pills every day for months and it faded to a distant memory for me. I began my struggle with Crohn's Disease last August. I spent six weeks with diarrhea every day, arguing with my doctor, telling him there was something serious wrong with me and that I did not need a gynecologist or phychiatrist to help. I even told him about my dad's disease on more than one occassion. I finally had enough and took matters into my own hands, was admitted to the hospitol for six days and diagnosed with Crohn's. In the following months, thanks to prednisone, I regained the twenty pounds I lost and another twenty ontop of that. Most of it was in my face! For the first time in my life I struggled with my weight. Now I feel like I'm regaining control of my weight and my health. This marathon will be the pinnacle of my recovery. I hope that by participating in this marathon, even though me and running aren't friends, I can make a difference by raising money to find a cure and educate not only the public, but the medical community as well. No one should be told they are crazy simply because the doctor is at a loss for a diagnosis or too arrogant to pay attention. Every dollar you give will bring us that much closer to finding a cure. I'd love not to have to take pills every day for the rest of my life! Thank you in advance for any help you can give. Your generosity is very much appreciated.
