Hello and thank you for visiting my page at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and supporting my candidacy for Man of the Year.
Every five minutes someone is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. Every ten minutes someone dies from these blood related cancers. Founded in 1949, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has a network of 63 chapters and has raised over $360 million since its inception. Over 75% of all money raised goes to program services.
Let me formally introduce myself. I am D.G. Spencer Ludgate; but feel free to call me “Spencer”. I was born on February 9th, 1965 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Two years later, after my father received his Master’s Degree from the University of Bowling Green, my family moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. My father, a Canadian Citizen, was very familiar with Detroit; as well as a Tigers and Lions fan. Being a graduate of the Lorne Greene School of Broadcasting and having a Masters Degree of English, he decided to get his Doctorate in Communications from Wayne State University. (He was the play-by-play radio announcer for the Bowling Green Falcons while earning his Master’s!)
Unfortunately during this time, my parents got divorced. My father decided to move to New York City to seek his fortune in the entertainment industry. My mother decided it was time for her to get a college education. So when I was five years old, she moved us to Tucson, Arizona. (I am an only child, so it was just the two of us). Tucson is the city that I call my hometown and due to her studies, we traveled all over the Southwest. It is here, at the age of ten, that I first became aware of leukemia. There was an article in the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson’s major daily newspaper), “Ricky Knows he’s Dying”, about a boy who had leukemia, and knew he was not going to survive.
Also when I was ten, my mother graduated from the University of Arizona with Masters’ Degrees in Cultural Anthropology and German Languages. She decided to move us to California to pursue a Doctorial Degree (originally at UC Berkley, but transferred and completed at UCLA). Except for summer trips to New York to spend time with my father, I have lived in California since I was ten (most of it in the Los Angeles area). I consider Los Angeles my home; and as my friends say, I am more native than the natives… Like all of us, over the last 29 years I have known many people who have battled cancer (including: Grandfather died of Kidney, Mother survived Ovarian, my Father’s Wife is battling Colon, and a friend of mine is a lymphoma survivor).
And now for the stuff that reads like a personal ad… I have worked in the Financial Services Industry since I was 21, and am currently a Vice-President / Bond Trader for a large Regional Bank. I have an MBA (with a concentration in Finance) from Pepperdine University. I live in the Hollywood area; and yes, I enjoy the sunshine. My hobbies are Motorcycling, Photography, Golf, Hiking, and Bicycling. I am also an avid sports fan. I have never been married and do not have any children. I am a firm believer that children are our future and society’s most important asset. When I am not “Uncle Spencer” to my friends’ children, I have mentored “At-Risk” teenagers and volunteered teaching banking/financial classes at middle schools.
Once again, I want to thank you for taking your time to read my bio and supporting my candidacy for Man of the Year. By clicking the "Make a Contribution” button below, your tax-deductible contribution will benefit Emily Koss (our “Girl of the Year”) and the over 1.3 million current blood cancer patients.
P.S. I would like to thank my photographer friend, Andre Proia, for the wonderful portrait I am using for my candidacy. |
