How does the Run for a Reason Program work?
Run for a Reason is a program designed to help local charities receive financial support through the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events. Over this weekend, four road races are held in downtown Pittsburgh; a 5K Run, a Marathon Relay Race, a 13.1 mile Half Marathon, and a 26.2 mile Marathon. Everyone who registers for a race is encouraged to raise money for one of our official charities.
Participants in any event can collect pledges and donations from their family, friends and coworkers on behalf of a charity. The Run for a Reason Program strengthens ties between the running community and local charities, and also provides much needed financial support for the underprivileged in the Pittsburgh area.
Funds are never given directly to a charity from the Marathon, as the Dicks’ Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon is itself a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. Runner registration fees are used solely to cover event costs and are never redistributed to our official charities. Each charity is responsible for overseeing its own fundraising campaign, and the total amount of money raised relates directly to the efforts of the charity.
Why Run for Multiple Sclerosis Dreams?
Multiple Sclerosis Dreams, Inc. - "We Make Dreams Come True For People With Multiple Sclerosis. ". As a new organization founded in 2010 we have already raised enough funding to make our first dream come true. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disorder that affects at least 300,000 - 400,000 people in the US alone, although there is speculation that number could be closer to one million people who suffer. MS is generally discovered and diagnosed when people are in their mid to late twenties, although it can affect children as well as older adults.
MS is generally categorized in three categories; Primary Progressive, Secondary Progressive, and Relapsing Remitting. Many people with MS are unable to work, whether it be due to extreme fatigue, inability to effectively use their arms, confinement to a wheelchair, problems with vision, and many other factors. This can also affect the quality of life and the ability to provide for their families.
We want to help those who live with MS by making their biggest dream come true. This could be a family vacation, a powered wheelchair or scooter, handicap accessible ramp for their home, college assistance for their children, meeting a favorite celebrity, the possibilities are endless. Our goal is to give them hope and help ease some of the stress that they endure because of their medical condition. No one should be unable to live a dream because of a medical condition and we want to help make dreams come true.
Multiple Sclerosis Dreams, Inc. is striving to be a nationally known organization and will be holding fund raising events and benefiting people with MS throughout the United States. We are thrilled to bring excitement and hope to the Multiple Sclerosis community and raise MS awareness.
