Hello everyone!! I am about to do something I never imagined I would and need YOUR help!! I am training for and will complete the 13.1-mile Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half Marathon on December 5th. I am working hard to train for this amazing race as well as working hard to raise funds and awareness for research leading to improve treatment options and to find a cure for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Crohn's disease is a chronic (ongoing) disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea and even malnutrition. The inflammation can spread deep into the layers of affected bowel tissue. Ulcerative colitis on the other hand, affects only the colon and is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea. The inflammation involves the entire rectum and extends up the colon in a continuous manner. Crohn's and ulcerative colitis can be both painful and debilitating and sometimes may lead to life-threatening complications.

It is estimated that as many as 1.4 million Americans have IBD; however, many more suffer in silence due to potential embarrassment and alienation. Crohn's disease may occur in people of all ages, but it is primarily a disease of adolescents and young adults, affecting mainly those between 15 and 35. On average, people are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in their mid-30s, although the disease can occur at any age.

Prior to receiving an invitation to come to an information meeting for Team Challenge, I had never heard of Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. I wanted to become more involved with my community and charitable organizations so when I received the invite I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do just that. The information meeting was more than I could have ever imagined! I was surprised to learn how many people suffer with these diseases every day. Hearing the testimonial from parents whose children suffer from the disease weighed heavily on my heart and I knew right then I was committed to helping these families.

I will be running in honor of one of our Atlanta Honored Teammates, Matt Capers. Matt is a nine year old boy who has been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Matt has been hospitalized twice in the past year and in January he had an acute and severe medical emergency where he spent 10 days in the hospital-the majority in the ICU-due to complications from his medications. Due to his young age, Matt’s doctors and parents fear that they have few options left to treat his disease long term. More research and options are needed for children with these diseases and that is one reason I am very excited about helping to raise money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).

I have never, NEVER done anything like this before. As a member of Team Challenge, I have a coach, a training program, and teammates to support me. I have committed to a training schedule with additional trainings with my team on the weekends, and I’ve promised to raise $3,700 in donations to The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. I AM MOTIVATED! I AM COMMITTED!! I WILL DO IT!!! (Watch your mail for my post-event news update!!)

I hope you agree with me about the importance of this cause. Please help support me by giving generously. A minimum of 82 cents per dollar raised by CCFA goes directly to research and patient support, and your contribution is tax deductible. If your company matches charitable contributions, please include matching forms with your donation. Of course, your good wishes and positive vibes to sustain me in my training and your praise as I cross the finish line will also be graciously accepted.
