| My name is Carol and I'm living with Lupus! It's been almost 6 years since I first heard the word Lupus and have been fighting this disease every day since. You may not know it to look at me, but this has dramatically changed my life as well as the lives of my family. Many days it’s a struggle just to “act fine” and do everyday things. Lupus doesn’t just effect the sufferer, but their loved ones as well.
This past year has been very challenging for us all. Last summer I started having difficulty breathing along with chest pains and I struggled to finish the Walk. I am thankful that the chest pains have now subsided, but the breathing issues continue. Despite many changes and additions to my medications as well as changes to our home in order to make it a cleaner more sterile environment my resting lung volume remains at 56%. My life consists of 16 pills, 1 nose spray, and 3 inhalers a day along with 1 quarterly injection with one more bi-monthly injection to start over the next month or so. Understandably, this takes a huge toll on my family physically, emotionally, and financially. Yet, I am one of the lucky ones.
There is no cure for Lupus. Lupus is a significant, life-diminishing and life-threatening disease that can cause damage to any vital organ of the body, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain as well as the skin and joints. More than 1.5 million people are afflicted with Lupus. Yet, historically Lupus research has been seriously under funded and the disease itself continues to be misunderstood by the public, many policymakers, and even members of the medical community. Lupus can range from mild to life-threatening at any given time. Thousands of Americans die from Lupus-related complications each year. Besides the disease itself, the many treatments, which including taking an arsenal of powerful medications can often be worse than the disease itself. However, they are needed to prevent one’s immune system from destroying their vital organs. Lupus also attacks most people in the prime of their lives, thus having significant economic impact as well.
My desire is to gather as many walkers and runners as possible in order to raise money to both help increase awareness of this devastating disease and fund the additional and much needed research. Please help me provide hope to all Lupus sufferers, their families and caregivers. Please join my family and I on the Lupus Loop for the third year on Sunday, October 26th. Can’t walk? – Make a Donation. Spread the word! Thank you, Carol Gangewer |
