Your support means a lot...to me and to thousands of others.
Thanks for visiting my Light The Night homepage. This will be my fourth year of fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and I’m proud to be part of their effort. I first got involved with LLS as a research grant recipient in 2004. I was impressed with the organization’s devotion to both basic and clinical research and to patient services, and I am continuing to support their fundraising efforts.
The Light The Night Walk is LLS’ annual event, and it serves several purposes. First, and this is where you can help, it is their primary fundraiser. The LTN walk also serves as a rally to pay tribute and bring hope to thousands of patients battling blood cancers and to commemorate loved ones lost. And while the walk itself is not long, it is inspiring to join the parade of lighted balloons (white for patients and survivors, red for friends, family, and supporters like me). As a former LLS-supported researcher and a current fundraiser, it is both humbling and encouraging to meet survivors and patients, as well as other researchers and clinicians, at Light The Night.
The Society funds lifesaving cancer research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and many other types of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplants that have prolonged and enhanced the lives of patients. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue have already begun to provide drugs and procedures that are improving quality of life.
But more research is critically needed:
- Every five minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every ten minutes, someone dies.
- Leukemia causes more deaths among children than any other cancer
- More than 20,000 Americans died from lymphoma in 2006
- The survival rate for myeloma is just 33 per cent
