Walking with chutzpah
Before Chemo, During Chemo, And Current Pictures, And A Picture From Last Year's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Gelatin Slide Event
Some people have asked me, "Does chemo hurt?" That's a hard question to answer. Is it enjoyable? No. So I guess it hurts. But it does more than hurt: it destroys. It made me nauseas, gave me headaches, was the reason for multiple MRI's, injections, and ER visits. All of this was a result of being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
My name is Kate Herzlin. Six years ago, my friends were at summer camp, and getting ready for school in the fall. I was stuck in hospital beds, doctor's offices, and operating rooms. I wanted more than anything to be able to play outside, go to school like a normal kid, have a routine, wake up at the same time every morning and go to sleep at the same time every night. One of the most traumatic parts for me was losing my long, curly red hair. I was known for it. When I was little, I'd go out to dinner with my family and receive a free dessert just because the wait staff thought I looked like Annie. Suddenly, I was bald and wearing a bandana every day. Now, I'm in remission and have my red curly hair back. But too often, that is not the case for those diagnosed with blood cancers.
My team is called "Weinblatt's Warriors" in honor of Dr. Mark Weinblatt of the Cancer Center for Kids. He is my pediatric oncologist, and saves more than lives - he saves childhoods. His quirky, humorous antics combine with his enormous intellect to form some kind of a super-doctor. He'd go out of the room for ten minutes to make several phone calls and find out how the top medical minds in the country would treat your case, then return riding on a toy car (built to fit a three year old). He's my hero, and my team is fighting with his chutzpah in their hearts.
By supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, you are supporting your family, your friends, myself, and all of those whose lives have been affected by blood cancers. I have been raising money for them since 8th grade, and the efforts of the staff there never cease to amaze me. If anyone can help find the cure, it's the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. So I ask you to help me by making a donation (any amount is appreciated - all of the money goes to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society), walking as apart of my team at the Light the Night Walk, or sending this information to a friend to help spread awareness. By helping me, you are helping to keep me cancer-free. I'm six years in remission, and I have no intentions of stopping there.
And if none of that convinced you, there will be cookies at the walk! Who doesn't like cookies?
