Every five minutes, someone in this country is diagnosed with blood cancer: Every ten minutes, someone loses the fight.
Dear Loyal Cartridge Collectors,
Most of you don’t know my story as how I came to be your “Cartridge Lady”. However, on a personal note, I have reason to share it with you. So here it is in a nutshell:
At 6 ½ months pregnant with my second child, and already a mom of an 18 month old, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage 3B. My daughters recently turned five and seven years old and are healthy and thriving. My battle was intense and lasted almost two years, but I am a survivor in “remission” since diagnosis 03/2001. Since then, I have made many friends who share similar stories. Some are fortunate enough to be in remission and some no longer with us.
From personal experience I can tell you that the C-word, cancer, creates a ripple effect in peoples’ lives. The expenses are tremendous regardless of insurance. Time and energy seem to disappear into thin air and support is greatly needed. Paperwork and typical daily responsibilities become overwhelming. Sometimes simply finishing a sentence seems an amazing challenge; yet, creditors and bill collectors want answers. My story consists of many heroes. Friends and strangers alike worked together for my family. They raised money and babysat my children and I in shifts allowing my dedicated husband to continue to work. They delivered dinners and made phone calls on my behalf. The unselfish and sometimes anonymous help could never be praised enough by me. My finest lesson in life has been to “Pay it Forward” or pass it on. Here is my chance.
Along with my participation with the “Light the Night” (September 30th at UNLV) walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society ( www.lightthenight.org ) 436-4220 and actual $$$ raising, I also donate a portion of my empty ink and laser cartridge collection, donating nearly $1000 just from cartridges last year - bringing my last year’s fund-raising total to over $13K and my four year total over $40K.
So bring your cartridges from work, home, your neighbors’, your friends’, and your enemies’. I can’t think of a better reason to save your trash for someone like me to collect it. Call me (702) 480-2775 and together we will figure out the best way for me to gather the cartridges.
If you would like to participate in the walk, contact the society or me and reference me. (Team Jessica) I would be honored to have you walk on my team and accompany me in my fund-raising efforts September 30th, UNLV.
Please call me if you have any questions. Thanks. Jessica Langgin
