We're walking again!
Welcome to my Light The Night Walk home page. The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide evening walk to raise awareness and funds to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
I'm participating in the Walk in honor of my father, Norman Howard Schwartz, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in the fall of 2002. While he was recovering, he succumbed to pneumonia, since his immune system was weakened from the chemo and radiation treatments. He died one day before his 73rd birthday, on November 22nd, 2002.
A year and a half later, his first grandchild was born, a boy. We named him Noah Harrison after his grandfather. Just like last year, Noah and I will walk again this year in honor and celebration of this very wonderful man. But this year, our family of walkers will be increased by one! Noah will be joined by his baby brother, who is due on September 10, just in time to Light the Night!
We need your support to help accelerate cures and hope for patients and their families. Although research is responsible for increasing survival rates for these diseases, the battle is far from over. Did you know that:
- Every five minutes, someone in this country is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every nine minutes, someone dies.
- Leukemia is the leading cause of disease-related death among children under age 15.
- Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers.
- The myeloma survival rate is only 30 percent.
Please make a donation to support my participation in the Light The Night Walk. By doing so, we’ll both be helping save lives. I hope you'll visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
