A Mom's Walk 2004

Ryan's Hope

A Reason to Fight

Ryan is my son. He turned 4 on July 31st. We plan to have him in our lives for many more years.

Ryan was diagnosed with a type of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma on November 7, 2003. He is undergoing high dose chemotherapy treatment in an effort to rid the cancer from his body. If successful, his treatment will end in November 2004. At age 3, his biggest challenges were managing the side effects of the cancer-fighting drugs such as mouth sores which prevented him from drinking so much as water and low blood counts placing him in jeopardy of contracting life threatening infections. But the true evil is the cancer. The true battle is against the cancer.

Ryan has been quoted survival rates of 50% to 70%. We need to do better. He and others like him are counting on us to advance the medicine and research to combat blood cancers.

As seen above, Ryan is courageous and strong. In the midst of this intense treatment, he was able to enjoy a day at Burke Lake Park. His ability to cope with the potent drugs has improved dramatically since they first invaded his body. At first, recognizable as a sick child by the lack of hair and obvious frailty, he is now almost indistinguishable from a healthy child. And we dream of the day that cancer is a distant memory, the days at the park are not newsworthy, and he is a healthy child. Please help me to contribute to conquering blood cancers and making dreams like ours a reality.

I am walking on October 2, 2004, in the nationwide event of Light the Night sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. On behalf of the Society, I am accepting donations of any amount - none are too small - or too big!

From a mom who desperately wants to prevent others from following in Ryan’s footsteps, Thank you for your support.
