I
had never run a marathon before until I ran last year’s Boston Marathon with
the American Liver Foundation Run for Research Team. The weather was yucky but
I managed to finish in 4:43. I followed that by running the Chicago Marathon
with the Chicago RFR team in October. Donors generously gave over $6000 for the
two combined. Thank you!
This
year, I will be running the Boston Marathon again, in honor of all
those—especially my patients, friends, and relatives—who suffer from and in
memory of those who have died of hepatitis B and C. I will be dedicating the
run to my friend and patient Mr Jing-Chen Jou, who used to run marathons and
died of hepatitis C-related liver cancer.
Hepatitis
B (HBV) infection is a serious problem, especially for those from endemic areas
such as China, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It is the #1 cause of cirrhosis and
liver cancer worldwide. Those with chronic HBV are 8-10 times more likely to
get liver cancer and 25% will die from cirrhosis or liver cancer. While chronic
HBV affects 0.3% of the overall US population, if strikes between 10-15% (and
as high as 25% in certain groups) of Asian Americans. Asians and Pacific
Islanders have 5-11 times the rate of liver cancer than other ethnic groups and
it is one of their top causes of cancer and death.
To
be Asian means knowing someone who has or has died from hepatitis B or liver
cancer. As a family physician who has cared for many patients and seen the
devastation of HBV, I am committed to increasing screening, education,
vaccination, and treatment of hepatitis B on local and national levels.
Hepatitis
C (HCV) infection is very similar and can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
It is much more common than HBV in the US.
Please
support me in my run and contribute as much as you can to prevent, detect, and
cure hepatitis and other liver diseases. Thank you!
