I am about to embark on a fantastic journey and I would love the support of my friends, family and community. I will complete the 13.1-mile Kona Half Marathon, to raise funds and awareness for research leading to improved treatment options and a cure for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease. They are chronic disorders that cause inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract - causing painful inflammation of the intestines, bleeding, and the inability to absorb nutrients, among many other possible symptoms.
Last summer for the second time in several years, I got extremely ill. I was in and out of what feels like a dozen doctor visits and eventually ended up in the hospital. I had lost 15 pounds and was terrified to find out what was wrong. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Once diagnosed I was able to get on medication and recovered pretty quickly.
I HAD IT EASY! These chronic diseases can be extremely debilitating. To think about someone feeling the way I did last summer and worse for years on end, even as young as in one's teens is heartbreaking.
It is estimated that as many as 1.4 million Americans have IBD; however, many more suffer in silence due to potential embarrassment and alienation. Crohn's disease may occur in people of all ages, but it is primarily a disease of adolescents and young adults, affecting mainly those between 15 and 35.
Together, we can make a difference! As a member of Team Challenge, I have two coaches, a training program, and teammates to support me. I have committed to a training schedule with team group trainings on the weekends, and I’ve promised to raise donations for The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. I AM MOTIVATED! I AM COMMITTED!! I WILL DO IT!!! (Check my facebook/twitter for updates.)
By now I hope you agree with me about the importance of this cause. Please help support me and this cause that is in my life every day.
A MINIMUM of 75 cents per dollar raised by CCFA goes directly to research and patient support, and your contribution is tax deductible. If your company matches charitable contributions, please ask me about matching forms with your donation. Of course, your good wishes and positive vibes to sustain me in my training and your praise as I cross the finish line will also be graciously accepted! |
