I am writing to you this New Year because I have taken on a personal challenge. On April 20th, 2009, I will be running the Boston Marathon. This is not a challenge that I am taking lightly. I began my 20-week training after Thanksgiving. The Boston Marathon will be a tough adventure for me and it will be my first marathon!
I am honored to be running for an extremely kind family in my town. My daughter's classmate, Will Broderick, whom she has known since preschool was diagnosed at the age of 18 months with an autoimmune disease known as Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) which affects his kidneys. He has had countless hospitalizations, IV's, infusions, blood draws, and biopsies. Everyday he needs to take immunosuppressant drugs with the chance of scaring his kidneys.
He is lucky in the sense that the drugs seem to help his condition. However, being "lucky" is sometimes not good enough. NS can progress. If it does, it can cause continued swelling of the body and many other complications. This in turn, causes a decrease in the quality of life, not excluding kidney failure and dialysis. He has been so strong through it all and a truly admirable person!
Along with running for my friends, I am running for NephCure. The NephCure Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose main goal, along with raising public awareness and education, is to find a cause and a cure for both NS and a similar disease known as Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). These two devastating diseases can both lead to kidney failure. Unfortunately, because they are autoimmune diseases which lead the body to attack itself, kidney transplants are frequently unsuccessful.
My goal is to raise $15,000 for the research of these diseases, research that will hopefully find a cure. It is a priviledge and an honor to be running for my friends---they are an amazing family! I know that in these hard economic times it is difficult to make donations. I would greatly appreciate you sponsoring my efforts. Any amount makes a difference!
